A weekend camping is a great way to reconnect with nature and explore the great outdoors. If you are up for a weekend road trip, think about heading towards Woodbridge, VA, you’ll find there are lots of great spots to discover, so we’ve made this list to help you find the perfect outdoor destination for your next vacation. Sometimes you just have to get away from Abingdon for awhile. What’s your favorite camping site?
1. Leesylvania State Park
Situated to the south of Woodbridge, on the banks of the picturesque Potomac River, Leesylvania State Park is a great place to combine history and nature. The area was once visited by Captain John Smith in 1608, while today the area is covered by lush woodland and is an excellent place for fishing, hiking, or boating. It’s also a great spot to stop and relax for a picnic by the water after a long day of recreation.
The park only has space for tent camping, with a private, primitive campground that can be rented by groups. There are also four tent sites available that can only be reached by water, making it the perfect place for an overnight stopover for those arriving by kayak or canoe. All campsites need to be reserved in advance by contacting the park office by phone or email.
2. Pohick Bay Campground
An excellent spot for a family camping adventure, with a waterpark near the campground where kids will love a day of sliding and splashing, while everyone will enjoy heading out onto the bay with a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, which can be rented from the campground. There’s also a public boat ramp that those with their own boat can launch from, and picnic shelters that can be reserved in advance or on the day.
The park campground is designed with families in mind and has over 150 shady sites to choose from, of which 100 have full 30 or 50 amp electrical hookups, while the remainder are non-electric tent sites. Most of the sites include a grill, fire ring, and a picnic table, and are close to the campground facilities, which include a camp store with groceries and camping supplies, and a bathhouse with hot showers, flushing toilets, sinks, and a laundry.
3. Prince William Forest Park
This oasis of quiet and calm to the southwest of Woodbridge is the perfect place for outdoor recreation, with endless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and more. The forest park is also a great spot for wildlife watching, with numerous unusual species found in the park, which also acts as an important refuge area.
The forest park has a huge area that includes lots of camping options across its four separate tent and RV camps. There are also several areas for cabin camping if you miss the comforts of home. Three of the campsites are front-country, with access to modern amenities, while one is a more primitive back-country site. You’ll probably be charged an entrance fee for the campsites on top of the one to enter the park.
