If you’re thinking about buying a plug-in car, it can be difficult to decide between an all-electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid. Your choice could come down to the type of driving you mostly do, where you live, or running costs. Here’s what you should know before you buy.

Electric vehicles (EV) rely entirely on the battery for power. As a result, EVs have larger battery packs than hybrids, which gives them a longer all-electric range. But when the battery runs low, you need to find a charging point and wait until it’s charged enough to continue your journey.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines a gas engine with one or more electric motors. With their smaller batteries, they have a shorter range on electric power, but on longer journeys, the gas engine kicks in. You can also recharge the battery when and where it’s convenient for you.

How Far Can You Go?

The 2022 Lincoln Aviator PHEV has an all-electric range of up to 21 miles, which is ideal for running errands or a short commute to work. With a full charge and a full tank of gas, it will take you up to 471 miles. However, hard driving, extreme weather, or heating and air conditioning can reduce the electric range of EVs and PHEVs.

Convenient Charging

If you have the required facility at home, charge your EV or PHEV overnight so it’s always ready to go in the morning. Also, many workplaces are installing free charging stations for employees. The network of public charging stations around the country is growing all the time, with some supermarkets and malls offering free charging for customers.

More Benefits of EVs and PHEVs

Buying an EV can get you a Federal tax credit of up to $4,543 for a PHEV. You can drive solo in HOV lanes in some locations, and you may benefit from free or cheaper parking.
